Dave’s Lounge #232

Question of the week: What was the first song you ever purchased? Was it a record, a tape, a CD, or a download? Mine was "Private Eyes" by Daryl Hall & John Oates, a 89-cent vinyl 45 back in 1980. Leave a comment here with your answer, and don't be the least bit embarassed by it. We've all given over money for horrible music at one point or another.

Dave’s Lounge #232 — 22 Comments

  1. The first cd i bought was in 1999, Nightmares on Wax, a Warp records album, with ‘Carboot soul’, it featured a brilliant trip-hip/down tampo track called ‘Les Nuit’, an amazing sample on a well known Quincy jones track. Still listen to it now and it sounds as fresh as the first time i played it. Massive fan of the show Dave, keep up the good work. Thanks from the other side of the pond…

  2. Let me out “geezer” you, Dave. First record, a 45 rpm, Hang On Sloopy by The McCoys. And yes, it was purchased when that song was a hit. Google the Billboard charts for 1965. I still have the it.
Love the show. There’s always a least a half dozen on my iPod!

  3. Boogie Shoes (KC & The Sunshine Band)! Don’t remember the year, but it was on the charts at the time, I got the 45 RPM single for $.79 I believe.

  4. Hey dave…It was 8-Track…Jimmy Buffett Son of a Son of a Sailor. More proud of the artists I’ve bought because of the show. Keep it up.

  5. 8 track – Dave Dudley – Trucker Hits! – Swap meet Nothern WI
    45- Blonde – The Tide is High – K-Mart
LP – The Village People- self titled – Inner Sleeve Records
Cassette- Quite Riot- Metal Health – ShopKo
CD- Prince and the Revolution – Purple Rain – Inner Sleeve Records
    MP3 – Amy LaVere – Anchors & Anvils – iTunes

    Go Packers!!!

  6. Hi Dave.

I’ll give you two; the first album I asked for as a child was the Star Wars soundtrack (Episode IV, circa 1977)…and the first cassette I bought with my own money was Men at Work’s “Business as Usual”, circa 1983. I still own both, although my Star Wars LPs are in hellicious condition now.

  7. Hey dave, firstly thanks so much for featuring my track. That has made my night. Secondly, the first bit of music I ever bought was, quite awfully, Slipknot’s first album as a young mosher *facepalm*.

  8. The first music I bought was Metallica’s black album on cassette in 1996 or 1997. I don’t remember how much it was, but I bought it with my first paycheck.

  9. Great show, Dave! Did you get any pictures of the bio-hazard tattoo? My first musical purchase was Don McLean’s “American Pie” single in 1972. I still remember having to flip the disk midway through the song.

  10. If I’m not mistaken, the first album I bought with my own saved lunch money was the Odyssey through O2 remix album on a cassette—sometime in the mid ’90s. I’d buy books more often though and only started regularly adding to my music collection when I got a paying job.
I still have that cassette, but I repurchased the album on iTunes so that I can have it with me in higher quality… Plus—after a few house moves—I really appreciate the economy of space gained by having a computer-based collection.

  11. Earl: You win. ;^)

    Geoff: You’re most welcome!

Bart: I didn’t get any photos yet, and I do feel I should ask her first before I share any here.

Ventzi: I went fully digital with my music collection many years ago and haven’t looked back. Someone asked in another thread if we’re losing something by not having a physical representation of the music we buy on hand, but I haven’t really felt that. Maybe my decks ate enough tapes back in the day for me to prefer the way things are now.

  12. I believe my first 45 was 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” and my first album was “Not Fragile” by BTO. My first CD was “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd. I brought it home with my first CD Player. By that time I had 2 wooden “Turtles” crates full of LP’s. Many many CD’s and iTunes downloads later, I have a very eclectic mix. A lot of 80’s gems, a bunch of 90’s stuff, a whole lot of 70’s replacements for those albums I still have. I just can’t seem to part with them. The artwork was wonderful!

  13. Thanks for the YouTube link! It just makes me love the song all that much more! I always have to play two songs together, “I’m Not In Love” and “Cry” by Godley & Creme (another landmark song/video produced by Trevor Horn… I could go on and on about Trevor, another genius IMHO)
probably because “Cry” has some of “I’m Not In Love” in it. I remember there were a couple of songs on the Godley and Creme album that sampled the old 10cc song. I’m hoping that album makes iTunes one of these days…

  14. First purchase was Queen’s Greatest Hits, on cassette, somewhere around 1982, and Styx’s Paradise Theatre. Played them for a year on a tape player that didn’t even do stereo…

  15. My first single was David Bowie’s “The Laughing Gnome” – the 1973 reissue. Don’t judge me – I was only 7.

“Haven’t you got a gnome to go to?”
    “Not me, I’m a gnomad!”

  16. Gee, which format. The first full-length LP I bough was Introducing…The Beatles on the Vee-Jay label. It is still in my LP collection of around 2000 LPs. My 1st 8-track was Queen’s 1st, which kicked off my love of progressive (art) rock thru the balance of the 70’s. It’ hard to pinpoint which CD was #1, but based on the stacks, it has to be one of the Pink Floyds, most likely getting the digital version of Dark Side of the Moon. I can’t say which trip-hop song was 1st, but Dave’s Lounge is only 1 of 2 podcasts I download. I always look forward to each episode. Thanks.

  17. Dave,

I have been listening to the 7th annerversay mix over and over…so it took a while to get "back" to 232.  Nonetheless, the first music I ever purchased was Tears for Fears "Sowing the Seeds of Love"; on cassette, in 1989.  To this day, they are still in mt top 5 of best of all time bands.

  18. 'Meddle' by Pink Floyd on vinyl back in 1971 I think. The long piece 'Echoes' is a classic.
